Georgette Turkson received the Smart Rain Scholarship for the spring 2023 semester. She is currently working towards a Bachelor of Science degree at Drexel University, with an emphasis in Management Information Systems. We couldn't be more proud to offer our scholarship to her.
This scholarship is a testament to her hard work and dedication to her studies, as it recognizes students who have demonstrated notable academic performance and a commitment to water conservation.
Georgette's passion for Information Systems is evident in her commitment to her studies. Besides her studies, Georgette is active in extracurricular activities. She is a member of the Dornsife, and participates in several volunteer projects—including hosting community dinners. She also is an active member of Productocto, a product management club. Her involvement is a testament to her dedication to making a positive impact in her community.
Being an inspiration to her peers, Georgette is an example of hard work and dedication. These qualities are sure to pay off in the long run. Five Creative Ways to Reduce Your Water Footprint
Now more than ever, it is vital to reduce our water consumption and water footprint. Why? Water footprint has become a very important issue in our world today and rightfully so as we are seeing a high rise in water usage, which is negatively affecting our communities, and ecosystem and creating a ripple effect around the world as was highlighted by Christianna Lowery, Fall 2022 winner of the Smart Rain Scholarship Program.
Follow these tips and let’s reduce our water footprint
1. Time your shower
Most individuals shower at least once a day, using roughly 17 gallons of water. I challenge you to time your shower or better yet play your favorite song at the beginning of your shower and strive to finish your shower at the end of the song.
2. Going for alternatives that require less water to grow and harvest
One’s water footprint can be accumulated directly or indirectly. One indirect way is by consuming certain vegetables. Examples of vegetables that need a lot of water to grow include carrots, tomatoes, sweet corn, and lettuce. A fun way of reducing your water footprint would be to add more vegetables that do not require lots of water for growth in your diet (if possible) like kale, cabbages, and cauliflower.
3. Rewear your clothes
Before you add your clothes to the laundry, conduct this test. Is it soiled or stained? Is it smelly? And most importantly can I wear this again? If you answered no to the first two questions then it is highly likely you can wear it again. It is estimated you can save up to 30 gallons of water depending on your washer.
4. Grow low-water plants
Are you thinking of getting plants for your home or as a gift? Choose low-water plants like snake plants, orchids, or cacti which do not need a lot of water to thrive and are also easy to care for.
5. Educate family and friends
As I prepared to write this article, I spoke to friends and family and a number of them did not know what our water footprint is and how it includes even the water that is used in the production of goods you consume. By sharing with friends and families about the need for reducing water consumption and footprint, we provide positive reminders to them to reduce their water footprint.
I hope it is clearer that reducing your water footprint is not difficult or complicated.
